Let me clarify the meaning of Old Bastard. One
might get the distinct impression that this expression refers
to some untidy, cruddy, decrepit person, wondering the streets
and begging for a handout. Well you could not be more mistaken.
This expression Old Bastard is as old as America itself and can
be traced way back into American History. Webster defines old
bastard as, an offensive or disagreeable person -used as a generalized
term of abuse. This has its points of merit. An old bastard is
a person who knows who he is. A person, who has a strong character
and is not afraid to stand his ground. Remember the expression,
"He is a though old Bastard" An old bastard is a person
who will never back down and faces fear and uncertainty with
a smile.
The real Old Bastard always has group of followers around him
and is always the center of attraction, loved by many, and hated
by some. Thus the expression "Come on you old Bastard join
us for a drink"
We must also consider the fact
that to be an old bastard you must have lived a full life, where
adventure and trouble was a common part of living, your second
nature. To be an old bastard in your younger days your friends
and your enemies had to know that you would not stand for disrespect
or bullshit. To be an old Bastard in your younger years a good
fight was just like a good meal and almost as good as sex. |
In the younger years the women of the real old
bastard were always around ready to jump when asked. In later
years the women still love to be in the company of a grouchy,
stubborn old bastard, who is loud and grumpy but has an aura
of fascination about him.
To be a true old bastard your bike was always your most pride
possession, no man or woman could ever mistreat your ride.
So you may ask, how old does one have to be to earn the title
of Old Bastard. Well my dear friend the word is "earn the
title" not age. One can be 100 years old and never become
an old bastard; others at 45 have already been crowned as an
official rough-neck Old Bastard.
Ok, so who will determine if you are or are not entitled to this
title? Only your friends or the crowd around you, are the true
judges in awarding this title. At times you will hear a younger
guy who you pissed off at you but is afraid to confront you,
he will say, "That mean old Bastard is a real son of a bitch"
other may address you while saying, "your ok in my books
for an old bastard."
Those who want your respect may play the role of though guy by
saying, "anyone who messes with this old bastard messes
with me."
Well, an Old Bastards age may have moved on, he may be a little
more grumpy than usual, he may have to wear glasses, his waist
line may be on the heavy side, he is still smoking, or chewing
tobacco, he still swears like hell, drinks like a fish, has more
money in his pocket than all the other young punks in the place,
and most of all the Old
Bastards still have a ride that shines like the sun and roars
like the devil. |
