What Does Public Security Really Do ?
The tasks of the PSO (Public Security officer is endless in the municipality where they operate.  This is a
personalized security service usually custom made to serve the needs of the municipalities that they patrol.
Unlike the local police department these officers are paid directly from the municipal taxes and therefore will offer
services that may not be available from the Montreal Police.
We must keep an open mind that these officers are not police officers and they were never intended to be so.
However their role in the municipality is an asset. Every municipality have taken the care and initiative to
sculpture the officers to perform particular personalized roles within the municipality.
One case in point that comes to mind is what we call “the vacant home check”.  When a resident is out of
town they will inform the PSO and on a regular basis special attention will be given to this particular home. Mail,
may be picked up for the resident under special circumstances,  as well as newspapers and flyers, although this
service is only for special occasions and not commonly done.
Answering Alarms:  In many cities residents will put the PSO as a first responder on their burglar alarm call
list. The officers are dispatched to the BA (burglar alarm) by a dispatcher.  Once on
location, which is usually no more than a few minutes, after the call is made, the
officer will access the situation and decide if Police intervention is need or not. This
service usually saves the resident unwanted charges by the police for false alarms,
and assures rapid respond to the alarm. The PSO always during his or her patrols
are vigilant and keep a keen eye spotting suspicious people that may not fit in the
municipality, and who may be a concern. In such cases they will follow the suspect
or at the limit they will be stopped and causally through proper interrogation tries to
extract information of their intentions. All incidents are always reported and filed for repeated offences of the
same nature.
These are only a few details of the daily routine of the PSO. Therefore the usual cliché “They are only ticket
givers” is far from the truth, although issuing tickets of many natures is also within the responsibility of the
officers.
Residents become familiar with the officers they trust the presence of the PSO knowing that when in need the
PSO will arrive minutes after they are called ready and willing  to give assistance or refer them to the proper
channels. The citizens who use, and understand the full service of the PSO appreciate their presence, to the
point that the SPVM are only called in the rarest and extreme cases.
